Featured Project: J. Hayne
A man walked into Wight's nursery and asked the employee behind the counter if he knew of a good pruner in the area. This
fellow happened to know Randall, and was well aware of his unique pruning abilities. The Hayne yard has metamorphosized
over the years, but started with the detail pruning of the entire yard. The project grew to include an automated irrigation
system along with an artificial rock bench that served as a manifold cover, the installation of a mortered wall and fence, and broken
concrete stepping stones with blue star creeper for ground cover.
Some trees and plants that had already existed in the yard were several Rose bushes, Rhodies, Azaleas, a 'Milky Way' Dogwood, and a
Lebenon Cedar along with a Weeping Atlas Cedar in the back yard. The thumbnail picture on the home page shows some cloud
pruning of an Ilex, and the intense reddish pink flowers of the Azaleas in full bloom. Some of the other plants and trees
in the yard include Clamatis, Crytomeria, Hinoki Cypress, Lilac, Irish Yew, Japanese Maples, Pieris Japonicas, and Mountain Laurels.
Randall pruned several trees using a cloud pruning technique (click here for a short
discussion of this topic), to reflect a subtle Asian influence.

Discovery of the "Ultimate Pine"
Randall recalls this story: One day while driving after work, I noticed some golden metallic shimmering trees out of the
corner of my eye, and immediately turned around, to discover cloud pruned Pinus Virginianas 'Waite's Gold'. I made some phone
calls to my regular clients and told them of running across a tree they would look incredible in their yard. It looks like many
other pine varieties most of the year, but it turns a beautiful yellow gold color (see photo) during the winter. I got lots of
compliments on the tree, not only from the Hayne's, but from other people, too. It's definately one of my favs - it's just ironic
how I came across it.
