Featured Project: J & B Gutman

A guy by the name of Dave used to mow J & B's lawn on a regular basis.  One day Randall was out checking his nursery in Snohomish, and Dave told Randall about this couple that was looking for a landscaper.  After meeting with them and talking about the types of plants and trees that they wanted, Randall set to work on their landscape drawing.  The first item that was drawn was the sandstone path, since it would later determine the flow of energy through the garden space.

The choice of plants and trees were carefully selected to be varieties that would be relatively easy to maintain.  As a result, about half of the plant materials are native.  Granite for the outcroppings originated from Canada, while the sandstone used for the paths, came from Montana.  Some of the trees in the yard include a Lace Bark Pine, which doesn't get very tall, and which has a bark that gets very distinctive as it gets older.  There are several Sumac trees (native), Blue Alaskan Cedar, Deodar Cedar, and varigated Willow.  Many in the neighborhood have asked about the varigated Willow (see picture) because it has a cream colored leaf with varigated colors of green and pink, which is quite unusual.  The tree gets incredibly bushy and this is particularly when the leaves are more noticeable.

The Making of the
"Edible Landscape"

White bush roses were initially installed, but discovered that the canes were prone to diseases.  They were replaced with a more native variety that were pink in color.  Chameleons were planted along with some Calla Lilies, a Rose of Sharon shrub, and some hardy Gardenias.  The latter is a more robust variety than those that you find in warmer climates like California, and the fragrance is fantastic!  There is a side yard that has not only the native theme, but also includes a wide variety of edible fruit:  jostaberry (tastes like a gooseberry when under ripe, and a black current when fully ripe), blueberries, and strawberries are some of shrubs; a 5-way pear, 5-way apple (both trees that produce four different varieties), cherry and plums are some of the chosen trees.
