Q: Can you give me a good reference on pruning?
A: Untrained laborers are probably more responsible for the worst pruning that I've seen in my life.
I saw a friend's rhody get devastated by someone (what's scary is that they were from a landscaping crew) topping off the tree!
The best defense is to be knowledgeable about pruning, even if you aren't going to be doing the work yourself.
Plant amnesty (who was developed by well known author, Cass Turnbull), offers this great article on how NOT to prune.

Q: When's the best time to fertilize my lawn?
A: Now is the time to apply a fertilizer combo that has pre-emergent in it (mostly to control crabgrass and to
prevent other weeds from germinating). The grass is needing nutrients at this time since it's come out of hibernation and
is right on the verge of its peak growing period. You'll then need to reapply the fertilizer in 2-3 months when the grass is
actively growing.
Sometime between July and August, you can fertilize again since the grass is stressed out by summer's heat.
Just make sure to not apply the fertilizer when temperatures are exceedingly hot. The best and most important time to fertilize,
though is in the fall when the lawn is recovering from all the damage from the summer. You won't have to fertilize again until
winter when the grass needs some additional storage of nitrogen.
