About Randall Routt, owner of Masterpiece Gardens
Perhaps you find it hard to believe that a person can have 35 years of experience when they are only 48 years old.
Randall started mowing lawns for people around in his neighborhood when he was 10 years old. "I've always felt that
my karma's been good because I mowed a lot of yards for old ladies for free. They were always so appreciative, that
I didn't feel like charging them!"
During his sophomore year in high school, Randall went to work at Des Moines Way Nursery, in Burien.
"Hal & Ben Seiki were the name of the brothers that ran the nursery, and they were instrumental in getting me excited about plants.
Hal was a mentor to me, and taught me a great deal about pruning in the Japanese style. Since it was a retail
operation, I also got to learn about working with the public, to answer questions about plant varieties and plant care."
Randall notes: "The best experience that I've had on the job came about when managing a 16 acre nursery.
I was responsible for assisting and supervising eight other employees as well as maintain the day-to-day operations.
Sometimes things would get so busy around the place, I would literally be running around most of the day. As crazy as that
sounds, I really enjoyed the pace, and thrived in that kind of environment. This type of setting though really pushes a
person, and forces a person to stay focused, yet remain 'calm, cool and collected' through some very chaotic situations."
"There was a brief period in my life when I went into the Coast Guard. Some of my family members have
teased me because they knew that I used to get sea sick. Once I discovered the redeeming properties of Dramamine,
though, I was okay! Here's another situation where you're having to succumb yourself to rescuing people, amid rough
seas and some harrowing experiences. If you see yourself as goal-oriented, you simply focus on what needs to be done;
it's more a matter of not having time to think about risks or potential hazards. You have to focus on accomplishing
missions and yielding favorable results...I always try to stay focused on positive things."
"I don't know when exactly I decided to go into business for myself. I've been into landscaping for
such a long, long time that it's been my specialty and what I really enjoy. I dabbled with finished carpentry when I
was younger while getting involved in the job corps, and it sure helps when I build decks or even trellises! I have
lots of fun with most of my projects so it doesn't matter what I do. I truly love all aspects of landscaping: whether it's
working on irrigation, digging up trees, or designing a landscape drawing. If people that come in contact with me can
pick up on my enthusiasm, I guess I can't hide it very well!"
